Group messages could be easily spied upon, WhatsApp denies claim

Whatsapp has an end-to-end encryption to every chat conversation for its 1.3 billion users. Though it sounds safe, there is a flaw in group messaging which can be attacked by hackers. A bunch of researchers from the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany say that anyone who controls WhatsApp’s servers could efficiently insert new people into a private group, even without the permission of the administrator of the respective group.

“The confidentiality of the group is broken as soon as the uninvited member can obtain all the new messages and read them,” says Paul Rösler, one of the Ruhr University researchers who co-authored a paper on the group messaging vulnerabilities. “If I hear there’s end-to-end encryption for both groups and two-party communications, that means adding of new members should be protected against. And if not, the value of encryption is very little.”

The researchers say that administrator of a WhatsApp group can invite new members, but WhatsApp doesn’t use any authentication mechanism for that invitation. Hence the server can simply add a new member to a group with no interaction on the part of the administrator. After that, every participant’s in the group then automatically shares secret keys with that new member, giving him or her full access to any future messages.
Once an attacker gains control of the WhatsApp server he then has access to the conversation and could also use the server to selectively block any messages in the group. “He can cache all the messages and then decide which get sent to whom and which not,” says Rösler.

According to WIRED, a WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed the researchers’ findings, but emphasised that no one can secretly add a new member to a group—a notification does go through that a new, unknown member has joined the group. The staffer added that if an administrator spots a fishy new addition to a group, they can always tell other users via another group, or in one-to-one messages. And the WhatsApp spokesperson also noted that preventing the Ruhr University researchers’ attack would likely break a popular WhatsApp feature known as a “group invite link” that allows anyone to join a group simply by clicking on a URL.

A WhatsApp spokesperson has clarified through an email that, “Existing members are notified when new people are added to a WhatsApp group. We built WhatsApp so group messages cannot be sent to a hidden user. The privacy and security of our users are incredibly important to WhatsApp. It’s why we collect very little information and all messages sent on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted.”

The researchers write that the company could fix this group chat flaw by adding an authentication mechanism for new group invitations. Using a secret key that the administrator only possesses to sign those invitations could let the admin prove his or her identity and prevent the spoofed invites, locking out uninvited guests. WhatsApp is yet to take their advice.

Teens who see junk food ads eat 500 more snacks a year

Teens who see junk food ads eat 500 more snacks a year

Teenagers who watch lots of television adverts eat far more junk food, researchers have warned.

Experts found youngsters who watched more than three hours of commercial TV a day ate more unhealthily than those who watched very little.

On average, they had ten extra snack items, such as crisps, biscuits or fizzy drinks, a week – totalling more than 500 a year.

However, when they watched TV without adverts, there was no link between screen time and the likelihood of eating more junk food, the Cancer Research UK team found, suggesting adverts may drive snacking.

Campaigners have long called for a ban on junk-food advertising before the 9pm watershed – but ministers have so far resisted.

Advertising high-calorie food is banned during programmes aimed at children. But health campaigners point out that this does not apply to mainstream shows such as The X Factor or live football matches, which millions of youngsters watch.

Britain’s obesity problem is the worst in western Europe, with two-thirds of adults and a third of children overweight. Experts fear that the pattern will lead to major health problems, with rates of heart disease and diabetes predicted to soar.

Obesity is also the second biggest preventable cause of cancer after smoking.

Researcher Dr Jyotsna Vohra said: ‘This is the strongest evidence yet that junk food adverts could increase how much teens choose to eat.

‘We’re not claiming that every teenager who watches commercial TV will gorge on junk food, but this research suggests there is a strong association between advertisements and eating habits. It’s been ten years since the first, and only, TV junk food marketing regulations were introduced by Ofcom and they’re seriously out of date.

‘Our report suggests that reducing junk food TV marketing could help to halt the obesity crisis.’ The study was based on a YouGov survey, which questioned 3,348 youngsters aged 11 to 19 on their TV viewing habits and diet.

Separate research by the Obesity Health Alliance has found that more than half of food and drink adverts shown during popular family TV shows were for products high in fat, sugar and salt, which would be banned from children’s TV channels.

Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s prevention expert, said: ‘The Government needs to work with Ofcom to protect the health of the next generation.’

Professor Russell Viner, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said the study showed the power of advertising, and Caroline Cerny, of the Obesity Health Alliance, added: ‘Companies wouldn’t spend so much on advertising junk food if they didn’t think it worked.’

STATINS ARE SAFE FOR CHILDREN – AND COULD BENEFIT TENS OF THOUSANDS

STATINS are safe for children as young as seven, research suggests.

Up to 56,000 children in the UK with a genetic condition could benefit from the drugs, experts say.

Prescribed in their millions to the middle-aged and elderly to lower cholesterol, the drugs were thought to have side effects that would pose a risk to youngsters.

Now a University College London trial, which tracked 300 children as young as seven on statins for a year, has found there is no impact on their growth, or damage to the liver and muscles. It is thought statins could help the 56,000 sufferers of familial hypercholesterolaemia, which causes youngsters to have blocked arteries through childhood and puts them at risk of a heart attack as early as their 20s.

Researchers also found children with the condition were half as likely to be obese, probably as they had been given dietary advice to cut cholesterol. Study leader Professor Steve Humphries said: ‘These findings are incredibly reassuring. Now, we can offer parents of children with the condition further comfort that the treatment is safe to take from a young age.’

Reliance Jio Phone's Rs 153 plan, which used to offer 500MB data per day, will now give customers double the data. Jio has increased the daily data limit in the Rs 153 plan for JioPhone to 1GB per day

Reliance Jio Phone’s Rs 153 plan, which used to offer 500MB data per day, will now give customers double the data. Jio has increased the daily data limit in the Rs 153 plan for JioPhone to 1GB per day, which means a total of 28GB data for a validity of 28 days. Jio Phone also has two smaller sachet packs of Rs 24 (valid for 2 days) and Rs 54 (valid for 7 days), though these continue to offer 500MB internet per day.

Reliance Jio users should note that the Rs 153 recharge will only work if the SIM is inserted into a JioPhone. The plan is not valid for any other device. However, as we have already pointed out Jio Phone users can take advantage of other plans from the company, including the Rs 399 and higher if they want longer validity and more data on their feature phones. Jio recently slashed data rates across its prepaid plans.

Reliance Jio is now offering 1GB daily data at Rs 149 pricing which includes free unlimited voice calls (local and roaming) coupled with free unlimited SMS as well. It is also offering 1.5GB data per day packs, starting at Rs 198 and going up all the way to Rs 498.

Jio’s Rs 398 plan now has 105GB data for 70 days, while the Rs 448 plan will offer 126GB data. Once again the plans include free voice calls, unlimited SMS and access to Jio’s suite of apps.

Reliance JioPhone is a feature phone from the company with smart capabilities and 4G VoLTE support. It is powered by the KaiOS and comes pre-loaded with all Jio’s apps including JioTV, JioMusic, etc. However, this is a single-SIM feature and a customer can only use the Jio SIM on this device; no other network can be used on the JioPhone.

Currently the JioPhone is limited to apps from the company, though reports in the past have claimed Facebook and WhatsApp apps could make an appearance on it. The feature phone has an effective price of Rs 0, but there is a refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500 which can be claimed after three years on return of the device. Jio had also announced a cable TV connector for the JioPhone, which has not yet launched.
