Tom Brady tells Erin Andrews he knows he’s ‘not going to play another 10 years’

There won’t be any Tom Brady spirals whipping around Gillette Stadium in 2028.

Ahead of the Patriots victory over the Colts on Thursday, the 41-year-old New England quarterback told Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews he will not hold the same job title at 51.

Brady noted that when he was 25, he thought his NFL career would last forever. Today, he has a wife and kids living their lives and knows they won’t get these days back.

“When you’re 41 you think, oh man, I’ve got kids and there’s a school play,” Brady said. “I gotta be there for that because they’re not going to be 10 years old again. Or eight years old or five years old. I know I’m not going to play another 10 years, you know, and I think every year is just a little bit different. As you get older, there’s a lot of other things happening in your life that you’ve got to figure out how to balance.”

Extreme global weather is 'the face of climate change' says leading scientist

Exclusive: Prof Michael Mann declares the impacts of global warming are now ‘playing out in real-time’

The extreme heatwaves and wildfires wreaking havoc around the globe are “the face of climate change,” one of the world’s leading climate scientists has declared, with the impacts of global warming now “playing out in real time.”

Climate change has long been predicted to increase extreme weather incidents, and scientists are now confident these predictions are coming true. Scientists say the global warming has contributed to the scorching temperatures that have baked the UK and northern Europe for weeks.

The hot spell was made more than twice as likely by climate change, a new analysis found, demonstrating an “unambiguous” link.

Extreme weather has struck across Europe, from the Arctic Circle to Greece, and across the world, from North America to Japan. “This is the face of climate change,” said Prof Michael Mann, at Penn State University, and one the world’s most eminent climate scientists. “We literally would not have seen these extremes in the absence of climate change.”

“The impacts of climate change are no longer subtle,” he told the Guardian. “We are seeing them play out in real time and what is happening this summer is a perfect example of that.”

“We are seeing our predictions come true,” he said. “As a scientist that is reassuring, but as a citizen of planet Earth, it is very distressing to see that as it means we have not taken the necessary action.”

The rapid scientific assessment of the northern European heatwave was done by Geert Jan van Oldenborgh, at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute and also colleagues in the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium. “We can see the fingerprints of climate change on local extremes,” he said.

The current heatwave has been caused by an extraordinary stalling of the jet stream wind, which usually funnels cool Atlantic weather over the continent. This has left hot, dry air in place for two months – far longer than usual. The stalling of the northern hemisphere jet stream is being increasingly firmly linked to global warming, in particular to the rapid heating of the Arctic and resulting loss of sea ice.

Prof Mann said that asking if climate change “causes” specific events is the wrong question: “The relevant question is: ‘Is climate change impacting these events and making them more extreme?’, and we can say with great confidence that it is.”

Mann points out that the link between smoking tobacco and lung cancer is a statistical one, which does not prove every cancer was caused by smoking, but epidemiologists know that smoking greatly increases the risk. “That is enough to say that, for all practical purposes, there is a causal connection between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer and it is the same with climate change,” Mann said.

Other senior scientists agree the link is clear. Serious climate change is “unfolding before our eyes”, said Prof Rowan Sutton, at the University of Reading. “No one should be in the slightest surprised that we are seeing very serious heatwaves and associated impacts in many parts of the world.”

It is not too late to make the significant cuts needed in greenhouse gas emissions, said Mann, because the impacts progressively worsen as global warming increases.

“It is not going off a cliff, it is like walking out into a minefield,” he said. “So the argument it is too late to do something would be like saying: ‘I’m just going to keep walking’. That would be absurd – you reverse course and get off that minefield as quick as you can. It is really a question of how bad it is going to get.”

How Your Personality Affects Your Health

Are you hostile or relaxed, stressed or social? Your traits play an important role in your well-being.

Could your personality kill you—or might it make you live longer? Could it give you heart disease, or protect you from illness? Could it push you toward or away from doctor appointments? Personality traits play a distinct role in determining how healthy we are, psychologists say. "Everything is related to everything else. How stressed or angry you are, and how you interact with the world, is contingent in large part on your personality style," says Michael Miller, editor in chief of the Harvard Mental Health Letter. "And that is going to have an enormous impact on your health."

Here's a look at common personality types and traits and how each can help or hurt your health (sometimes both):

Hostile

One of the aspects of the impatient, hard-charging Type A personality that is known to increase heart disease risk is hostility. Hostile people eat and smoke more and exercise less than other personality types, says Redford Williams, head of behavioral medicine at Duke University Medical Center and author of Anger Kills. They're likelier to be overweight in middle age and have higher cholesterol and blood pressure. Williams's past research suggests hostile people are also more likely to develop irregular heart rhythms, and to die before reaching their 50s. Most of these problems can be traced back to elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as increased inflammation in the walls of the coronary arteries, which leads to a greater risk of heart attack. No personality is set in stone, however, and Type A's can be taught how to take the edge off their hostility. Hostile heart patients who attend workshops that teach coping skills, for instance, have a lower incidence of depression and healthier blood pressure than Type A's who don't go. The key, Williams says, is learning how to communicate more clearly and how to control anger and other negative emotions. He suggests asking yourself four questions when you get angry: Is this issue truly important? Is what I'm feeling appropriate to the facts? Can I modify the situation in a positive way? Is taking such action worth it? Meditation, deep breathing, and yoga can damp hostility with a layer of calm.

 Impulsive

Because Type A personalities are defined by competitiveness, a drive to succeed, and a sense of urgency, they are prone to take risks and act without thinking, neither of which is likely to improve health. Non-Type A's can be impulsive, too. Such people are often not as well-grounded as others, says Robin Belamaric, a clinical psychologist in Bethesda, Md.: "They'll look at an opportunity that comes along and say, 'Hmm, that sounds like fun,' whereas another, more thoughtful person, will say, 'I'm going to pass, because I'm not sure it's the best idea.' "

Relaxed

If you're a Type B, you roll with the punches. You're relaxed, take life a day a time, and handle stress without cracking. That translates to a higher quality of life and lower likelihood of heart disease—less anxiety strengthens the immune system. The more we chill, the better off we are, says Miller: "You don't want to get locked into a stressful, tense state of mind." Over the long term, he adds, relaxing and managing stress effectively will lengthen your life, help your heart and gastrointestinal system, and just make you feel better overall.

Extrovert

People who are outgoing, involved in their communities, and have strong social connections reap health benefits. An analysis of 148 studies published in the online journal PLoS medicine in July found that on average, adults enrolled in a study with many close friendships were 50 percent likelier to survive until their study ended than were those with few friendships. And a 2009 study published in Perspectives in Psychological Science suggests that social support leads to improved coping skills, healthy behavior, and adherence to medical regimens. Bonding with others also reduces stress and improves the immune system—so making friends and getting involved becomes, in effect, a well-being tonic. What drives at least some of the health benefits goes beyond biology, Miller says. "It may have to do with the fact that when you're around people, you think, 'Oh, Martha has gone for her mammogram—that reminds me, I should, too.' "

Eager to please

People-pleasers—Type C's—are conforming, passive, and want to accommodate. That can be a good thing when it comes to patient compliance: They're more likely to take the right medicines in the right doses at the right times, for instance—once they see a doctor, that is. Making and following through on appointments can be challenging for Type C's, who tend to accept their fate as inevitable and fall readily into hopelessness and helplessness. That means others must push them to take care of themselves. "They may be less likely to maintain their health on their own," Belamaric says. "If they develop a problem, they may just complain about it, hoping somebody says, 'I have a good doctor, I'll make you an appointment.' " Some Type C's may be so mired that they don't seek medical attention—even when it's clearly necessary—and slough off preventive behaviors, like watching what they eat. "If they get a serious diagnosis, they may be passive, throw their hands up, and say, 'Well, there's nothing I can do about it, anyway. If it's my time, it's my time,' " Belamaric says.

Stressed and distressed

Type D's—D is for distressed—dwell on negative emotions and are afraid to express themselves in social situations. Compared to more optimistic sorts, a Type D may face three times the risk for future heart problems, according to a recent study in the journal Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes. Type D's also face a higher likelihood of compulsive overeating and substance abuse. "If you're a person who is prone to depression or anxiety, or if you're overly self-critical, there's more of a chance of turning to gratifying behavior to feel better," Miller says.

['Type D' Personality: How Distress Affects Your Health]

Optimistic versus pessimistic

Optimism "heavily influences physical and mental health," concluded a study published in May in the journal Clinical Practice & Epidemiology in Mental Health after researchers followed more than 500 males for 15 years. The rate of heart-related deaths was 50 percent lower among optimists than among pessimists. "Optimists have a higher quality of life, and they may be more resilient in the way they deal with stress," Miller says. "So if a problem comes along, they're able to handle it better, and they become less symptomatic." Glass-half-empty types harbor little hope for the future and tend more toward depression and anxiety disorders. But there's a catch for those at the extreme end of the optimism spectrum: They think of themselves as impervious to risks. Extreme optimists who smoke are the best examples. They believe they won't develop lung cancer. Why give up smoking to prevent a nonexistent risk?

The "self-healing personality"

That is the name Howard Friedman, a professor of psychology at the University of California-Riverside, attaches to people who are curious, secure, constructive, responsive, and conscientious. These traits translate to enthusiasm for life, emotional balance, and strong social relationships. "Positive emotions buffer hormonal responses to stress," says Friedman, who studies the relationship between personality and longevity. Self-healers, he says, "have healthier behavior patterns: more physical activity, a better diet, and less smoking and substance abuse."

RCB host Sunrisers in must-win contest

RCB host Sunrisers in must-win contest

Kohli is one of RCB's key players as far as the batting in concerned.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will take on already-qualified table toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad in a must-win Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter here on Thursday with their playoffs chances hanging by a thread.

After registering successive victories over Delhi Daredevils and Kings XI Punjab, the Virat Kohli-led RCB are a rejuvenated unit while SRH have been the team to beat this season, having won nine matches out of 12.

RCB are still languishing at the second last position on the table, while SRH are on top of the table with 18 points.

RCB lost seven of their 12 matches so far but the recent turnaround have rekindled hopes of a possible shot at the play-offs albeit some other results also going their way.

Kohli and ace South African batsman AB De Villiers are RCB's key players as far as the batting in concerned.

The pair have combined to pile up nearly half of RCB's total runs this season but the side needs bigger contributions from the likes of Moeen Ali and Corey Anderson.

Kohli has led from the front with 514 runs in 12 games.

De Villiers (358 runs) is next to him, although he has played two games less than the Indian captain.

RCB's bowling is spearheaded by India pacer Umesh Yadav who has looked in inspired form this term.

Umesh has delivered for the team, taking 17 wickets so far.

Coming to the away side, SRH depend quite a lot on opener Shikhar Dhawan (369 runs) and skipper Kane Williamson (544 runs) for inspiration.

Williamson has been a top leader since David Warner was ruled out of the IPL due to his role in the ball tampering incident.

The New Zealand captain would look to consolidate the team's top spot and ensure a top-two finish at the end of the league stage.

Apart from Dhawan and Williamson, Yusuf Pathan (186), Manish Pandey (189) and Shakib-Al-Hasan (166) have also chipped in at crunch situations for SRH.

The former champions' bowling has been their strength with the likes of Siddharth Kaul (13 wickets), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (8), Sandeep Sharma (8), leg-spinner Rashid Khan (13) and Shakib-Al-Hasan (12) adding a lot of variety to their arsenal.

Analyst says Apple may forego Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter for new iPhones

Analyst says Apple may forego Lightning-to-3.5mm adapter for new iPhones

Apple will probably stop bundling a Lightning-to-3.5 millimeter adapter with this fall's new iPhones, according to a Barclays memo obtained by AppleInsider. The multinational bank also cut its price target for Apple stock from $168 to $157, citing worries about a "weaker iPhone franchise."

"We currently model no dongle this year," wrote Barclays' Blayne Curtis. The analyst didn't provide any immediate evidence for the assertion.

Apple has included adapters with the iPhone 7, 8, and X, which otherwise lack 3.5mm jacks. The step is an admission that many people still have headphones, speakers, and other accessories that rely on the industry standard. In 2016 however the company touted its "courage" in removing the jack from the iPhone 7, suggesting it was part of a long-term plan.

Eliminating the adapter could frustrate some people, but would also aid corporate profits by cutting down on parts and packaging.

Pushing down expenses would be a logical step if the company also wants to push down end prices without harming margins, as multiple analysts and rumors have suggested. Outgoing KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently argued that an expected 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could cost as little as $550, below even the $699 an iPhone 8 currently costs.

Another analyst proposed that this year's 5.8-inch OLED model could start at $899 instead of $999 like the iPhone X. The higher price tag might instead be attached to a 6.5-inch "Plus" phone.

Barclays' reduced Apple stock target, shared by analyst Mark Moskowitz, is based mostly on research indicating "incremental deterioration in [iPhone] demand, particularly for IPX [iPhone X]." Echoing some other researchers, Moskowitz's view is that the price of the iPhone X is too high, and has probably "alienated many users."

He also contends that shoppers' main concerns are battery life, camera and texting functions, which means that average sales prices will decline for Apple and the smartphone industry as a whole.

Did Sony just hint at a 5G PlayStation Portable?

A new 5G PSP handheld console makes perfect sense. Here's why

Sony just made an interesting and potentially very revealing comment which suggests that the company is planning to release a new portable PlayStation, perhaps alongside the upcoming PS5.

  •  PS4 Pro review
  • PS4 Slim review
  • PSVR review

On April 27 Sony Corporation released its FY2017 financial results and, while overall these were good, in terms of its smartphone business, numbers were disappointingly poor. So poor in fact that Sony felt it needed to explain why it is staying in the phone business at all. The reason supplied by Sony? 5G technology.

Here's the report's key quote:

"By enabling high-speed communication, low-latency and simultaneous connectivity, 5G, which is expected to be commercialized in the near future, is a technology which we view as having immense potential, since it can connect all portable devices to the cloud. In order to fully utilize this leading-edge technology, we need to retain in-house our fundamental research capability and capability to create related applications. By continuing to work on 5G in our smartphone business, we are aiming to develop 5G technology as a competency that can be used across the Sony Group."

So Sony is staying in the smartphone business "to develop 5G technology as a competency that can be used across the Sony Group.”

Now, if you look across the Sony Group, at its divisions and technology markets, the most obvious and – considering the Nintendo Switch's insane popularity – potentially profitable area for 5G technology is in portable gaming, specifically portable gaming streamed from the cloud.

As T3 has reported over the past few years, both at the Tokyo Game Show and at E3, the current Xbox One X versus PS4 Pro-style internal hardware war each console generation seems to be becoming less relevant, with both Microsoft and Sony investing heavily in streaming technology and services (just look at last year's big play by Microsoft with its Xbox Game Pass subscription service) to help them transition seamlessly into a cloud-based future gaming landscape.

When you partner this with the insanely positive reaction by gamers to the portable Nintendo Switch console, which shows full-fat portable gaming experiences are very, very much in demand, it leads to the obvious conclusion that a new 5G-equipped PSP, a console that in its original incarnation was both much-loved and financially successful, is a very real possibility that could be realised far sooner than anyone thinks.

If Sony's 5G plans don't include a new PSP, the tech could also be heading to the company's cameras and laptops, but it's the prospect of a 5G PSP that excites us the most.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S may soon get Android P Developer Preview

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S may soon get Android P Developer Preview

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s users might soon be able to download and install the Android P Developer Preview on their devices. XDA Developers reports that the announcement was made on the official MIUI forums, but the but has since been taken down. However, the cached version of the post is still available here. In the post, a tentative date of May 8 has been put forward as the release date. FunkyHuawei.club has also posted the Android P build on their website, which can be downloaded here. It is not yet known if the preview would be closer to stock Android or MIUI.

The Android P Developer Preview has been available for a while now. However, it is currently only available on Google’s Pixel devices. As expected, the new update brings with it a number of changes and features, the most prominent being built-in support for display notches. In the preview, developers will be able to test apps with the notch factored in. There is also a way to simulate the notch on a full screen display. There is also a new design of the Quick Settings Panel with the notification drawer in rounded corners. Further, Google’s Smart Replies can be leveraged by other apps and Autofill has been improved to handle passwords better.

Besides these, the preview also also brings a number of changes under the hood. The OS brings improvements in ART performance and apps written in Kotlin. Further, users will see a warning message when installing apps made for version before Android 4.2. It will also restrict an idle app’s access to camera, microphone and other sensors. Apps can now request data from multiple cameras at once and a multi-camera API will allows apps to use dual cameras with more granular control. Other addition include support for HEIF and HDR VP9 Profile 2 image and video codecs.

Mars-bound flight from Vandenberg Saturday could be a first for the West Coast

Mars-bound flight from Vandenberg Saturday could be a first for the West Coast

A NASA spacecraft bound for Mars is scheduled to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base early Saturday, a historic event that will be preceded by several days of public events in the Lompoc area.

Saturday's predawn takeoff — conditions permitting, of course — will mark the first interplanetary launch from the West Coast, according to NASA. Typically, such missions launch heading east from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida due to benefits related to Earth's rotation, agency materials say. But the Atlas V-401 rocket being used for the Vandenberg launch is powerful enough to head south at takeoff, and the California location provides a generous six-week launch window, officials say.

Two public viewing locations will be open for the 4 a.m. launch and will have NASA team members on hand.

NASA's craft, the InSight, will be the first mission to explore Mars' deep interior. InSight's data is expected to shed light on processes that shaped rocky planets, including Earth, according to the agency. Instruments will measure Mars' heat output and listen for "marsquakes," scientists say, to map the planet's interior.

Scheduled events in Lompoc start Wednesday when scientists and engineers from NASA bring the agency's traveling Mars InSight Roadshow to town. The family friendly roadshow features hands-on activities, exhibits, models and public talks:
  •     At 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, exhibits will be open at the Dick DeWees Community & Senior Center at 1120 W. Ocean Ave.
  •     From 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, a public talk is slated at the Lompoc Public Library, 501 E. North Ave.
  •     From 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, exhibits and public talks will be held at the Allan Hancock College main campus at 800 S. College Drive in Santa Maria.

On launch day — Saturday — an official public viewing location will be open at the Lompoc Airport, 1801 North H St., starting at 2:30 a.m. Visitors can see the launch and watch tarmac commentary on NASA TV as well as meet InSight team members and city representatives. Several hotels are located less than a mile from the airport, according to Lompoc organizers.

A second public viewing site will be open starting at 3 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Mary's Episcopal Church at 2800 Harris Grade Road. InSight mission team members will also be on hand at the parking lot location.

Lompoc tourism organizations note hotels there tend to fill up early when Vandenberg launches are scheduled. They encourage visitors to book in advance.

Should the launch be postponed, NASA has until June 8 to get InSight off the ground. Daily launch windows will be open for two hours, with opportunities to go every five minutes during the window. InSight's departure will be from Launch Complex 3. Regardless of the departure date, InSight is set to reach Mars on Nov. 26.

The Mars InSight Roadshow is not currently slated to visit Ventura County, but it is getting close next month. On May 19, the exhibit will stop at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History at 2559 Puesta Del Sol.

Evening exposure to blue light from screens linked to higher risk of breast, prostate cancer

Evening exposure to blue light from screens linked to higher risk of breast, prostate cancer

New European research has found a link between night-time exposure to blue light, a range of the visible light spectrum emitted from smartphones and tablets, and an increased risk of developing breast and prostate cancer.

Carried out by an international team led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), the researchers looked at data from more than 4,000 people between 20 and 85 years of age in 11 Spanish regions, both with and without breast and prostate cancer.

The team assessed the participants’ indoor exposure to artificial light using questionnaires, and evaluated outdoor levels of artificial light for Madrid and Barcelona, based on nocturnal images taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station.

The results for the two cities showed that those who were exposed to higher levels of blue light had a 1.5-fold and two-fold higher risk of developing breast and prostate cancer, respectively, when compared to those who were less exposed.

Manolis Kogevinas, coordinator of the study, commented, “WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified night shift work as probably carcinogenic to humans. There is evidence pointing to an association between exposure to artificial light at night, disruption of the circadian rhythm, and breast and prostate cancers. With this study, we sought to determine whether night exposure to light in cities can affect the development of these two types of cancer.”

“Given the ubiquity of artificial light at night, determining whether it increases or not the risk of cancer is a public health issue,” added Ariadna García-Saenz, first author of the study. “At this point, further studies should include more individual data using for instance light sensors that allow measuring indoor light levels. It would also be important to do this kind of research in young people that extensively use blue light emitting screens.”

Recent research has mainly focused on looking at the effect of blue light on sleep. Many studies have found that our increased use of devices such as smartphones and tablets could be to blame for the current global sleep epidemic, as the blue light emitted from screens suppresses production of the hormone melatonin, which we need to fall asleep.

Many experts now advise avoiding bright light and blue light from computer and phone screens for at least two hours before heading to bed.

The results were published online in Environmental Health Perspectives. JB

World Asthma Day: Number of asthma patients on the rise in India

World Asthma Day: Number of asthma patients on the rise in India

World Asthma Day 2018: Asthma is an inflammatory disease that can interfere with daily activities. The number of asthmatic patients in India has gone up in the recent past.

On the eve of World Asthma Day (May 1), a doctor has revealed some alarming statistics. One among every ten persons affected by asthma globally is an Indian, with the country having 20 million such patients and the number is on the rise, said Subhra Mitra, Head of the Department of Pulmonology in Calcutta National Medical College. He added that a greater sense of awareness, preventive measures and proper detection and treatment is necessary. The statistics on asthma in India have been worrying for a while now.

The doctor said while the number of asthmatic patients in India is quiet high, the attacks are not as frequent as in Australia and certain European countries where asthma has a higher rate due to certain genetic reasons. “Asthma is hereditary. The genetic factors interact with environmental factors such as pollution to trigger asthma. Also viral infections and obesity acts as a trigger for asthma among the teenagers,” he said.

Stating that the medical infrastructure and awareness about asthma had significantly gone up in the country, the doctor said more awareness programmes and focus on providing less expensive medication was necessary to fight the “chronic inflammatory decease” that can become fatal if not treated properly. Talking about the available ways to treat the disease, Mitra stressed on the importance of going for a therapeutic remedy once asthma is diagnosed instead of rescue medication. He said inhalation therapy was the mainstay of treatment for asthma.

“Steroid is the backbone of asthma treatment. We always suggest the inhalation therapy as it involves lower consumption of steroid and can deliver the drugs directly to the lungs which is more effective,” he pointed out. The doctor said less costly steroids should be more in circulation to make the treatment more affordable.

Asthma alarm for children

Asthma alarm for children

Calcutta: Fits of dry cough at night, disturbed sleep, lack of energy on the playground and frequent bouts of cold are all alarm bells for asthma in children, doctors warned on the eve of World Asthma Day.

Nearly 10 per cent children aged six to eight years have been detected with asthma in the city in the past three years, paediatrician Ritabrata Kundu, a professor at the Institute of Child Health, said on Monday. Even two decades ago, Kundu's chamber would see around 25 patients a day. The number has nearly tripled.

Infants, too, are being diagnosed with asthma, Kundu said, blaming smoker parents for early onset of the disease.

Early detection and treatment can help children with asthma lead a normal life but it is not so easy as not all kids suffer from shortness of breath - the symptom most associated with the condition

"Thirty years ago, when I opened an asthma clinic, parents were wary of introducing kids to inhalers. But now asthma has become an acceptable diagnosis. Regular use of inhalers can keep asthma under control in children and help them engage in sports and other activities," Kundu said.

Pulmonologist Subhra Mitra, the head of the chest medicine department at Calcutta National Medical College, blamed pollution, stress and obesity for rise in asthma among teenagers.

"Pollution and emotional upheavals are making adolescent girls prone to the disease. In case of boys, the attacks often surface after 30," he said.

If neglected for long, asthma can affect the lungs or develop into chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), doctors said.

Many children suffer despite timely intervention because of faulty use of inhalers. "An asthma clinic needs to have a nurse who can show patients or their family members how to use an inhaler the right way. Otherwise the problem can get aggravated despite medication, Kundu said.

Parents of kids diagnosed with asthma need to make some lifestyle changes, according to doctors. "They should cut down on use of perfumes, stay away from pollution-prone areas and stop using mosquito coils. Most importantly, they should not smoke in front of the child," they said.

The Best Way to Spend 24 hours in San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Best Way to Spend 24 hours in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Visiting San Juan? Here are five experiences you won’t want to miss.

San Juan is a magical town filled with beautiful beaches, even more beautiful architecture, unique food, and a vibrant community. If you’re looking to relax and indulge in the things that make life great (like great drinks and delicious food), you came to the right place. Below you’ll find five activities you won’t want to miss when exploring the island.

Take a Stroll

The streets of Old San Juan look like something out of a story book. A lot of restoration has gone into preserving the beautiful architecture of San Juan, so today you’re able to see streets lined with beautiful brightly colored houses. Pastel pinks, bright oranges, and ocean blues make each home pop. But that’s not all—the streets are paved with blue cobblestones, making a walk through San Juan unlike any other.

Enjoy the Beach

The beach is a must-see when visiting San Juan. Although Puerto Rico is a Caribbean island, the beaches are less crowded than other popular island destinations. Your go-to beach is Escambron Beach, located between Condado and San Juan. It’s great for swimming, snorkeling, or just lounging in the sun and snacking at nearby restaurants. The next beach is the slightly trendier Condado Beach which combines nearby shopping with shaded lounging and even water sports. Finally, Playita del Condado is a great beach for families because of its small size and calm waters. Whatever your reason for visiting, San Juan has a beach for you.

Tour the Local Street Art

San Juan itself is a piece of art, but the city is also is filled with public murals. Typically large and sparkling, these public works are often brightly colored, just like the homes around them, and are thematically rooted in Puerto Rico’s history. Just keep your eyes open during your stroll through San Juan’s streets and you might just run into original Puerto Rican street art.

Dance in the Streets

When in San Juan, try salsa dancing in the streets. Specifically, La Placita de Santurce is a unique area to come and enjoy yourself. La Placita de Santurce is a public square surrounded by bars and restaurants, where the community of San Juan comes to let loose and enjoy each other’s company. At night, you’ll be able to grab a drink, dance in the street with friends, and mingle with locals and other visitors.

Discover Puerto Rican Cuisine

Puerto Rican cuisine is a combination of many cultures: Spanish, West African, and native Taino (and sometimes Asian cuisine is mixed in, too). Heavy on rice, plantains, meat, and olive oil, Puerto Rican cuisine is also generously seasoned and very well balanced food. It utilizes ingredients uncommon in the USA, which is all the more reason to give it a try when visiting San Juan. You can never go wrong with classic chicken and yellow rice in Puerto Rico, but if you want to branch out, try the mofongo (mashed plantains). You won’t be disappointed!

Washington, D.C., See Top Museums, Neighbourhoods in 3 days

Washington, D.C., See Top Museums, Neighbourhoods in

 3 days

With three days in Washington, D.C., you can see both the top tourist sites and experience some of the city's most popular neighborhoods.

Be prepared to cover a lot of ground on foot — comfortable shoes are a must.

Day 1: Museums & Monuments

The best intro to Washington is a trip to the National Mall. Start early at the tranquil Tidal Basin, where you will find the Jefferson Memorial, Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. Plan on spending about two hours here — more in spring or summer, when you can rent a paddleboat and float by the blooming cherry trees.

Walk north to the center of the Mall to see the World War II Memorial and Washington Monument. Continue west through Constitution Gardens until you reach the black wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the columned Lincoln Memorial and the solemn Korean War Memorial.

By now you'll have worked up an appetite, so break for lunch at Old Ebbitt Grill, a historic oyster bar and tavern a few blocks north of the Mall.

Afterward, walk over to the White House. You can take a tour of the president's home by making arrangements through your embassy.

From the White House, museums are next on your list. All 19 of the city's Smithsonian Institution museums are free, and cover everything from modern art to Native American cultures. It would be impossible to visit all of them in a day, or even week. Particularly popular are the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History.

When the sun goes down, take a taxi, bus or the Metro (D.C.´s rapid transit system) to the U Street Corridor. Chow down on an inexpensive D.C. classic: the chili-topped, smoked sausage at Ben's Chili Bowl. Then check out the neighborhood's hip bar scene or see live music at the 9:30 Club.

Day 2: Exploring the Neighborhoods

Start your day off in Georgetown with a cupcake from Baked & Wired or pastries from any of the other delicious bakeries in this charming neighborhood that dates back to 1751. Amid distinctive brick buildings, you'll find everything from top U.S. designer stores to small boutiques and antique shops.

Be sure to stroll along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal or spend some time at the Georgetown Waterfront Park. Stop for lunch at one of the many restaurants on M Street and Wisconsin Avenue — Martin's Tavern is a neighborhood standby and a favorite of many U.S. presidents.

Next take a bus or cab to Dupont Circle, where you may spot your country's flag on Embassy Row. Spend the afternoon touring the historic Anderson House, galleries and shops. Break for dinner and keep the night going in Adams Morgan, a popular nightlife district just a Metro ride or short walk away with plenty of bars, live music venues, nightclubs and late-night food spots.

Day 3: U.S. Government at Work

Start your day at the Library of Congress. The world's largest library offers free hour-long tours about its art and architecture.

Then head to the U.S. Capitol. Stop by the Capitol Visitor Center to learn more about the country's government and the building itself. You can also take a free tour if you book a reservation in advance.

Next, walk 15 minutes to the Eastern Market neighborhood for lunch and more shopping. Browse the stalls at this historic market — on weekends it features outdoor vendors with local artisan goods, antiques and collectibles. Down the street, Barracks Row is home to many top-rated restaurants and buildings with unique architecture.

Head north by taxi or bus to end the day at Union Market. The indoor, warehouse-style food market houses a range of restaurants, with everything from oysters and empanadas to tacos and gelato. Some stands offer wine, local beers and craft cocktails, making Union Market the perfect last stop to sip and reflect on your time in D.C.

Blood In Stool: Causes and Remedies

Blood In Stool: Causes and Remedies

 https://amzn.to/2vQ2ydh

Many people experience the presence of blood in their stool. This alarming discovery may be the result of bleeding inside of your gastrointestinal (GI) tract and can indicate a temporary affliction or a severe illness. On the other hand, a red “bloody-looking” stool can also be caused by something you ate. Producing black, tarry, or dark red stools is an indicator of health conditions ranging from hemorrhoids to inflammation in the upper GI tract. Some of the causes of gastrointestinal bleeding can be prevented or reversed with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Brief Overlook of Blood In Stool

Here are some of the more common symptoms, causes, and deterrents associated with blood in stool.
  • Hemorrhoids, anal fissures, peptic ulcers, and polyps are common causes of blood in stool
  • Abdominal discomfort, cramping, and fatigue sometimes occur with this condition
  • Avoiding meats, dairy, and processed foods can help reduce blood in stool
  • Age, smoking, and alcohol use are risk factors associated with blood in your stool
  • Blood in stool can result from spicy foods or seasonings irritating your GI tract
  • Certain foods can cause a false alarm, making your stool look bloody

Symptoms of Blood In Stool

Blood in your stool — also known as hematochezia — is usually the result of something going on inside your gastrointestinal or digestive tract. Here are some signs that your GI tract may need attention:
  • Black or tarry stool
  • Dark or bright red blood in stool
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Fresh blood on toilet tissue
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Test results indicating blood in stool
  • Fatigue
  • Cramping
  • Dizziness
  • Paleness
  • Shortness of breath

What Causes Blood In the Stool?

Blood in stool can result from a number of health conditions or even a reaction to food or medication. Occasional constipation is one of the most common reasons for blood in stool. Constipation means straining, and that strain can create hemorrhoids and anal fissures.

Hemorrhoids and anal fissures are two of the most common, but also least serious causes of GI bleeding. Hemorrhoids are swollen, irritated blood vessels that are prone to rupture. Many people do not realize that hemorrhoids can occur internally, and you may not have any symptoms until you see blood in your stool. An anal fissure, which is a cut or tear on the anus, is often caused by compacted stools or trauma and may bleed, producing bright red blood on your toilet tissue.

Other health issues that can cause blood in your stool include:[1]
  • Anal fissures
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Peptic ulcers
  • Colitis
  • Gastritis
  • Esophagitis
  • Mallory-Weiss syndrome (esophageal tears)
  • Diverticular disease
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Celiac disease
  • Esophageal varices (enlarged veins)
  • Angiodysplasia (a small malformation of the gut)
  • Tumors or polyps
  • Colorectal cancer

Should I Be Worried About Blood In My Stool?

If you have a lot of blood in your stool, it may be caused by acute bleeding and may indicate a serious health condition.

If you notice blood in your stool, it’s best to talk to your healthcare provider and identify the cause. If you have a lot of blood in your stool, it may be caused by acute bleeding and may indicate a serious health condition. Symptoms of acute bleeding are a rapid pulse, a reduction in urination, weight loss, and low blood pressure. You can become anemic with this kind of excessive bleeding or develop an iron deficiency as a result of blood loss and anemia. Regardless of the cause, if you see blood in your stool, contact your healthcare provider.[1]

Food poisoning can result in bloody diarrhea. Sensitivity to various types of food can also cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract which may cause bleeding in your intestines. If you notice you experience bleeding or abdominal discomfort after eating certain foods, it’s possible they could be the cause.
Could Your Red Stool Be a False Alarm?

Certain foods like blueberries, beets, licorice, and tomatoes can cause your stool to take on red and black hues.

Sometimes people mistake black, tarry, or reddish stools for bloody poop, when in fact it’s not blood they’re seeing. Certain foods can cause your stool to take on red and black hues leading you to believe that there is something wrong with your GI tract. Blueberries, beets, licorice, and tomatoes may be the culprits causing an oddly red or black stool.

If you think something you ate may be responsible for this stool color, avoid that food for the next couple of days, then take a look in the toilet. If your poop is back to normal, you’re in the clear. Stool that still has a bloody color indicate something is happening within your GI tract. Consulting with your healthcare professional can also provide peace of mind and ensure an accurate diagnosis.[2]

What Are the Risk Factors?

  • Age
  • Smoking
  • Alcohol use

Three factors contribute the most to your risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and

THE HISTORY OF THE EARTH DAY!

THE HISTORY OF THE EARTH DAY!

Each year, Earth Day—April 22—marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.

The height of counterculture in the United States, 1970 brought the death of Jimi Hendrix, the last Beatles album, and Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” War raged in Vietnam and students nationwide overwhelmingly opposed it.

At the time, Americans were slurping leaded gas through massive V8 sedans. Industry belched out smoke and sludge with little fear of legal consequences or bad press. Air pollution was commonly accepted as the smell of prosperity. “Environment” was a word that appeared more often in spelling bees than on the evening news.

Although mainstream America largely remained oblivious to environmental concerns, the stage had been set for change by the publication of Rachel Carson’s New York Times bestseller Silent Spring in 1962. The book represented a watershed moment, selling more than 500,000 copies in 24 countries, and beginning to raise public awareness and concern for living organisms, the environment and links between pollution and public health.

Earth Day 1970 gave voice to that emerging consciousness, channeling the energy of the anti-war protest movement and putting environmental concerns on the front page.

The Idea

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Senator Nelson announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media; persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair; and recruited Denis Hayes from Harvard as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land. April 22, falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, was selected as the date.

On April 22,1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Earth Day 1970 achieved a rare political alignment, enlisting support from Republicans and Democrats, rich and poor, city slickers and farmers, tycoons and labor leaders. By the end of that year, the first Earth Day had led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. “It was a gamble,” Gaylord recalled, “but it worked.”

As 1990 approached, a group of environmental leaders asked Denis Hayes to organize another big campaign. This time, Earth Day went global, mobilizing 200 million people in 141 countries and lifting environmental issues onto the world stage. Earth Day 1990 gave a huge boost to recycling efforts worldwide and helped pave the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It also prompted President Bill Clinton to award Senator Nelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1995)—the highest honor given to civilians in the United States—for his role as Earth Day founder.
Earth Day Today

As the millennium approached, Hayes agreed to spearhead another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy. With 5,000 environmental groups in a record 184 countries reaching out to hundreds of millions of people, Earth Day 2000 combined the big-picture feistiness of the first Earth Day with the international grassroots activism of Earth Day 1990. Earth Day 2000 used the power of the Internet to organize activists, but also featured a drum chain that traveled from village to village in Gabon, Africa. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, DC for a First Amendment Rally. Earth Day 2000 sent world leaders the loud and clear message that citizens around the world wanted quick and decisive action on global warming and clean energy.

Much like 1970, Earth Day 2010 came at a time of great challenge for the environmental community. Climate change deniers, well-funded oil lobbyists, reticent politicians, a disinterested public, and a divided environmental community all contributed to the narrative—cynicism versus activism. Despite these challenges, Earth Day prevailed and Earth Day Network reestablished Earth Day as a relevant, powerful focal point. Earth Day Network brought 250,000 people to the National Mall for a Climate Rally, launched the world’s largest environmental service project—A Billion Acts of Green®–introduced a global tree planting initiative that has since grown into The Canopy Project, and engaged 22,000 partners in 192 countries in observing Earth Day.

Earth Day had reached into its current status as the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year, and a day of action that changes human behavior and provokes policy changes.

Today, the fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day. We invite you to be a part of Earth Day and help write many more chapters—struggles and victories—into the Earth Day book.

2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. In honor of this milestone, Earth Day Network is launching an ambitious set of goals to shape the future of 21st century environmentalism.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Champions League unleashes special powers on Zidane’s men – Kross

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid: Champions League unleashes special powers on Zidane’s men – Kross

Real Madrid midfielder, Toni Kroos, has stated that the Champions League unleashes special powers on Zinedine Zidane’s men.

Kross said this ahead of Wednesday’s first leg semi-final clash with Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

According to the 28-year-old, Zidane’s men play extra well when the Champions League music plays and this may be because the competition unlocks something inside of the players.

The German international, however, admitted that their Champions League clash with Bayern will not be easy for the La Liga champions.

“This competition is the hardest to win, maybe that unleashes special powers in us,” Kross told UEFA.com.

“Emotions always play a part, especially on Champions League nights at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. “You can see that in our performances.

“A lot of the players have played in plenty of big games and we can stay calm in difficult situations because we know we can beat everybody.

“Even when we aren’t winning, we can change a game.

“We’ve experienced lots of situations so we don’t get anxious.”

Kross added, “Of course it’s special when you play against a team you represented for six or seven years.”

“I’ll see a lot of players I used to play with, or who I still play with in the national team.

“I played under Jupp Heynckes myself for a long time and I know he’s a top coach.

“When he came back, he changed the feeling of the whole team.

“Since he arrived, they’ve played much better so I think they’re harder to beat than last year but we’ll see.”

Group messages could be easily spied upon, WhatsApp denies claim

Whatsapp has an end-to-end encryption to every chat conversation for its 1.3 billion users. Though it sounds safe, there is a flaw in group messaging which can be attacked by hackers. A bunch of researchers from the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany say that anyone who controls WhatsApp’s servers could efficiently insert new people into a private group, even without the permission of the administrator of the respective group.

“The confidentiality of the group is broken as soon as the uninvited member can obtain all the new messages and read them,” says Paul Rösler, one of the Ruhr University researchers who co-authored a paper on the group messaging vulnerabilities. “If I hear there’s end-to-end encryption for both groups and two-party communications, that means adding of new members should be protected against. And if not, the value of encryption is very little.”

The researchers say that administrator of a WhatsApp group can invite new members, but WhatsApp doesn’t use any authentication mechanism for that invitation. Hence the server can simply add a new member to a group with no interaction on the part of the administrator. After that, every participant’s in the group then automatically shares secret keys with that new member, giving him or her full access to any future messages.
Once an attacker gains control of the WhatsApp server he then has access to the conversation and could also use the server to selectively block any messages in the group. “He can cache all the messages and then decide which get sent to whom and which not,” says Rösler.

According to WIRED, a WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed the researchers’ findings, but emphasised that no one can secretly add a new member to a group—a notification does go through that a new, unknown member has joined the group. The staffer added that if an administrator spots a fishy new addition to a group, they can always tell other users via another group, or in one-to-one messages. And the WhatsApp spokesperson also noted that preventing the Ruhr University researchers’ attack would likely break a popular WhatsApp feature known as a “group invite link” that allows anyone to join a group simply by clicking on a URL.

A WhatsApp spokesperson has clarified through an email that, “Existing members are notified when new people are added to a WhatsApp group. We built WhatsApp so group messages cannot be sent to a hidden user. The privacy and security of our users are incredibly important to WhatsApp. It’s why we collect very little information and all messages sent on WhatsApp are end-to-end encrypted.”

The researchers write that the company could fix this group chat flaw by adding an authentication mechanism for new group invitations. Using a secret key that the administrator only possesses to sign those invitations could let the admin prove his or her identity and prevent the spoofed invites, locking out uninvited guests. WhatsApp is yet to take their advice.

Website Image & Video Gallery: How to Create Portfolio Galleries & Impress Customers?

Website Image & Video Gallery: How to Create Portfolio Galleries & Impress Customers?

A good portfolio is critical to most businesses, photo bloggers, travel bloggers and freelancers working in the design and photography industry. One cannot ignore the importance of having a stunning product/portfolio gallery to attract new business. A portfolio gallery is almost critical for businesses that need to showcase their products, designs and prior work, such as photographers, wedding decorators, fashion designers, tattoo artists and graphic designers.

How do you create an image & video gallery or portfolio gallery that impresses your potential customers?

Creating the right image gallery, video, including auto-playing videos on your website can be tricky for those unfamiliar with web technologies.

If you are using an open source content management system, you can make use of plugins and add-ons to create a gallery to showcase images and creative works. However, some skill is essential to create the right kind of gallery for your website.
Features of Good Website Gallery

In a professional gallery, it is essential to have the right layout to highlight the best work. Your images should be laid out in a grid that looks elegant and professional.

Videos are becoming ever more important on the web. With the shift of website visitors to videos, one cannot ignore videos for showcasing your portfolio or products. Videos can also help you explain your product features in a better manner, and can be helpful to explain even the most tricky scenarios though visual story-telling.

When your portfolio gallery has videos, you also want videos to play immediately on website load so that the video gets noticed without the user having to take an extra action such as clicking the play button. A video that starts playing on its own is more likely to captivate the website visitor attention and get user interaction in comparison to one that plays only when click button is initiated.
